These paintings were done in Shanghai, China. In 1992. Shanghai was going thru a major change, demolishing large portions of the old city to build new malls and condos for the new Shanghai. "Shanghai Buddha" depicts Buddha looking at the highrise vs. the pagoda, not sure if this is truly progress.
"Laughing Buddha" depicts the wisdom and humour of the sage that can see thru the mundane reality.
